Alki Bands: Classroom Expectations/Tardy Policy

Students are expected to be in their seats with their instrument ready to play not more than two minutes after the bell rings for the beginning of class.  Students will be tardy if they walk into the classroom after the bell rings.  School policy will prevail regarding consequence of being late to class.

Students are expected to be on task at all times during the class period.  You need to be working in a positive direction that is conducive to the growth of our band program.

Talking needs to be restricted to only what is pertinent to the class period at any given time.  This means that you should not be socializing during class time.  This is especially important during times when I am working with a small group of students (sections, etc.).  You will get a feel for what I will allow in class very quickly.  Basically my goal is to keep the class moving at all times and not have you getting bored to the point that you feel it is necessary to talk (socialize).

Horns are never to be played outside of what the class is doing as a group.  This means you will not want to come in to the class and start playing your instrument prior to the class starting officially.  We will go through warm-ups each day designed not only to make your embouchure improve but also to make your tone and ear improve.  Take these daily warm-ups and make them a part of your normal practice at home as well!

At the end of each period please put your chair and music stand away in the back of the room.  Music can either be put in the folder rack or you can take it home with you.

Instrument storage is available for all students.  These areas will not be kept locked this year unless we have problems.  You may not keep other materials in these storage slots.  There are a lot of musicians and we need spaces for all instruments.

Class expectations are designed to allow our band to learn as quickly and efficiently as possible.  If you have trouble with these expectations Mr. Robertson will talk with you individually first,… call home to parents second,…. and talk to an administrator third.

Band Grading Policies:

The Alki Band class is a performance based style of class.  This means that as a member of this class you are a part of a performing ensemble.  Each member of the band should be at all performances throughout the year.  When even one student misses a performance you are letting your other band members down by leaving your part out of the performance after working so hard in class to get all of the music at a high level of excellence.

Grading in this class is based primarily on attendance at rehearsals and performances.  You must be at all rehearsals and performances to get an ‘A’ grade in this class

‘A’ student – is in class every day with his/her instrument and is ready to play no more than two minutes after the tardy bell rings.  This person always has their music ready to go and their instrument is always in good playing condition.  Attitude is exemplary and is conducive to the positive direction of the band.  Playing tests are well done and show evidence of work at home. Has made all performances.

‘B’ student - is in class every day with his/her instrument and is ready to play no more than two minutes after the tardy bell rings.  This person always has their music ready to go and their instrument is always in good playing condition.  Attitude is exemplary and is conducive to the positive direction of the band.  Playing tests show evidence of hard work but are lacking in details.  Has made all performances.

‘C’ student - is in class every day with his/her instrument and is ready to play no more than two minutes after the tardy bell rings.  This person always has their music ready to go and their instrument is always in good playing condition.  Attitude is exemplary and is conducive to the positive direction of the band.  Playing tests have not been done well, but the student is trying hard.  Has made all performances.

‘D’student – sometimes forgets instrument and has to sit in class without participating.  This person sometimes talks in class and is disruptive to the class process.  This person has missed one performance.  This student needs to re-evaluate why they are in the band program and make some changes to improve to be a better member of the band.

‘F’ student  – sometimes forgets instrument and has to sit in class without participating.  This has missed more than one performance.  This student needs to re-evaluate why they are in the band program and make some changes to improve to be a better member of the band.  A conference needs to be made with the parents to evaluate how to get his student back on track.

It is my hope that all band students at Alki will be ‘A’ students.  It is my goal to give you the tools needed to play your instrument so you can become an ‘A’ student and be a strong contributing member of this group.  Your responsibility will be to practice your music at school and at home on a regular basis to accomplish this task.  Band is a lot of hard work, but it should also be the most fun class in your school day!
