Percussion
At Alki we develop complete percussionists. Students will develop multiples skills on snare, bass drum, xylophone, latin percussion, timpani and marching percussion. Set drumming is counterproductive when we are trying to find ways to involve many students with limited opportunites to play. Set drumming is usually confined to jazz ensemble.Beginning percussion students are required to rent or purchase a bell kit, pictured above. A snare drum not an acceptable substitute for a bell kit and will not be allowed in practice. The school will supply any other needed equipment. Many students will sign up for percussion only to drop out after a year when they realize the standards are high and there is intense competition for playing opportunities. Unless your student is really motivated to work hard we strongly suggest they play something else.
