As of today, Vancouver Public Schools’ students and staff will not travel to athletic competitions and activities being held in Oregon at least until after April 10.
This is due to Oregon Gov. Kate Brown’s recent statewide ban on organized events with more than 250 people for four weeks. This announcement was in addition to Washington Gov. Inslee’s earlier guidance for limiting large events in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties.
A list of events and activities in which VPS will postpone or cancel participation is available on our website. If you have questions about additional athletic competitions or activities, please contact your child’s coach, school principal or athletic director.
This afternoon, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee announced the closure of all schools in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties starting no later than Tuesday, March 17, through April 24. Additionally, the governor asked all other districts in the state to prepare contingency plans for possible closures in the near future. The criteria for closure decisions include the number of COVID-19 cases, the inability to map affected individuals and student and staff absences.
At this time, the state-mandated school closures are limited to the three counties in the Puget Sound area. Vancouver Public Schools continues to operate its regular schedule. We are continuing to closely monitor the evolving situation and remain in regular communication with state and local health department officials, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Governor’s Office. We will continue to provide you with updates.
Sincerely,
Steve Webb, Ed.D.
