Beyond the school day
Extracurricular activities are an important part of life at Alki. We encourage all students to participate. Available activities include:
Band
Beginning Band: Designed for sixth-graders. It is a full-year course. This class meets daily, with a culminating grade coming partially from three to four community performances.
Advanced Band: Designed for seventh- and eighth-graders. It is a full-year course. This class meets daily, with a culminating grade coming partially from three to four community performances and at least one marching performance. The entire class also attends a band festival in March, and a few students are selected to play in the eighth-grade Honor Band concert in late May/early June.
Orchestra
Beginning Orchestra: Designed for sixth-graders. It is a full-year course. This class meets daily, with a culminating grade coming partially from three to four community performances. This class also attends the Portland Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.
Advanced Orchestra: Designed for seventh- and eighth-graders. It is a full-year course. This class meets daily, with a culminating grade coming partially from three to four community performances.
Choir
Beginning Choir: Designed for sixth-graders as a rotation. Students meet with an instructor for six to seven weeks and work on developing their vocal range and performance skills.
Advanced Choir: Designed for seventh- and eighth-graders. It is a full-year course. This class meets daily, with a culminating grade coming partially from three to four community performances. Students also attend a choir festival in March.
Alki offers several different educational enrichment opportunities in the fall and spring. Transportation is provided.
