During this period of school closures due to Covid-19, Vancouver Public School’s Special Education office would like to communicate with you our current plan for students with disabilities.

Current guidance from OSPI has directed school districts to prioritize their work in the following targeted areas:

  1. Health and safety of students, staff, and communities
  2. Considerations for supporting educational opportunities during school closures
  3. Maintain timelines for re-evaluations and annual IEPs

As we receive new information from OSPI and the VPS district office, this plan may be updated. The following is an update on two aspects of your child’s special education programming:

1. Special education staff and IEP teams may still hold re-evaluation, IEP team, and evaluation meetings during the closure. However, these meetings will be held in a method that allows for social distancing which may include virtual or phone participation. District staff will be making every effort to maintain timelines during the school closure. We ask for your understanding as we work to develop these new norms and systems of operation. We are working on developing staff resources and training to allow for this.

Your student’s case manager will be reaching out to schedule applicable meetings.

If you prefer to wait until after the closure ends for a meeting, please notify your child’s school psychologist and/or case manager. Per guidance from OSPI at the state level, we will be documenting any missed deadlines due to the closure.

2. It is our desire to assist parents and caretakers in supporting their children during this statewide emergency which has closed schools. With that purpose in mind, the district will be communicating about online learning resources that can be implemented at home for all students and for students with disabilities (online learning resources). These online learning resources are to be considered supplemental learning opportunities for students. Students will not be required to complete any schoolwork nor will teachers be providing grades for any completed work. We continue to receive guidance from OSPI and will communicate if any changes to services occur.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this new challenging experience. While responses may be delayed during the closure, we are monitoring emails and voicemails and welcome your questions. You can reach the special education office at 360-313-1158.

Durante este periodo de cierre de las escuelas debido al Covid-19, la Oficina de Educación Especial del Distrito Escolar “Vancouver Public Schools”’ (VPS por sus siglas en inglés) desea comunicarles nuestro plan actual para estudiantes con discapacidades.

La guía actual de la Oficina del Superintendente de las Escuelas Públicas del Estado de Washington (OSPI, por sus siglas en inglés) instruye a los distritos escolares a priorizar su labor en las siguientes áreas específicas:

  1. Salud y seguridad de estudiantes, personal escolar y comunidades
  2. Consideraciones para apoyar oportunidades educativas durante el cierre de las escuelas
  3. Mantener las fechas límite para realizar re-evaluaciones y programas IEP anuales

A medida que recibamos nueva información de OSPI y de la oficina central  de VPS, puede que este plan cambie. En lo siguiente les presentamos una actualización de dos aspectos del programa de educación especial de su niño:

1. Miembros del personal de educación especial y equipos de IEP puede que sí tengan reuniones de re-evaluación de servicios, de IEP y de evaluación durante el cierre. No obstante, estas reuniones se harán de manera que permita la aplicación de distanciamiento social que incluye participación virtual o por teléfono. Miembros del personal del distrito están haciendo todo esfuerzo posible para mantener las fechas límite durante el cierre de las escuelas. Les pedimos su comprensión mientras trabajamos para desarrollar estas nuevas normas y sistemas de operación. Estamos trabajando en encontrar los recursos y capacitación de personal para proceder de manera acorde.

El coordinador del programa IEP de su hijo se contactará con ustedes para programar la reunión que se aplique.

Si ustedes prefieren esperar hasta después del cierre de las escuelas para reunirse, por favor notifique al psicólogo de la escuela de su hijo y/o al coordinador de su programa IEP. Siguiendo la guía de OSPI a nivel estatal, documentaremos todos los vencimientos debido al cierre de las escuelas.

2. Deseamos asistir a los padres de familia y tutores en el apoyo de sus niños durante esta emergencia a nivel estatal que ha cerrado las escuelas. Teniendo este propósito en mente, el distrito emitirá un comunicado sobre recursos de aprendizaje en línea que se pueden implementar en el hogar para todos los estudiantes y estudiantes con discapacidades (online learning resources). Estos recursos de aprendizaje en línea se deben considerar oportunidades de aprendizaje suplementario para los estudiantes. No se requerirá que los estudiantes completen ningún trabajo escolar ni los maestros proporcionarán calificaciones para cualquier trabajo completado. Seguimos recibiendo instrucciones por parte de OSPI y les comunicaremos cualquier cambio que ocurra con los servicios.

Имея это ввиду, наш школьный район предоставит вам информацию о ресурсах обучения онлайн, которыми смогут пользоваться дома все учащиеся, включая школьников, имеющих особые потребности (online learning resources). Эти учебные ресурсы онлайн будут считаться дополнительными возможностями обучения для школьников. От учащихся не будет требоваться выполнять какие-либо школьные задания, и учителя не будут выставлять оценки за какие-либо сделанные задания.
